Within this blog post we raise awareness of the struggles many children face with poo and celebrate small steps towards toileting progress
Today. 10th February, is National Poop Day, and while it might make some giggle, for many children and families, poo challenges are real, and can impact daily life more than we realise. From constipation and anxiety to accidents and avoidance, struggling with poo can affect emptions, confidence, sleep and even learning.
Imagine this at home:
Your child no longer hides when they need a poo or insists on using a nappy. They aren't holding on for days, avoiding the toilet or experiencing painful constipation. Instead they recognise the signals inside of their body, feel comfortable sitting on the toilet, respond by pooing in the toilet and confidently flush and wash their hands, just part of their routine, without fear.
Now imagine this at school:
Your child walks in knowing exactly where the toilets are, feeling comfortable asking to go and uses the toilet when they need to. No more avoiding the school loo, no more rushing home in discomfort, no more accidents due to fear of unfamiliar spaces. Instead, they feel empowered and regulated to focus on learning, playing and enjoying their day.
Unfortunately, for many families, this isn't the reality yet!
Children might be struggling with painful constipation, feeling overwhelmed by sensory challenges, or unsure how to ask for help. Holding on, only pooing in specific places or feeling anxious about the toilet toilet are all signs that they need support. And, as parents, it can feel frustrating, exhausting and worrying when progress seems slow.
So, this National Poop Day, lets bring awareness of these struggles and celebrate every small step forward.
Whether its tracking toilet habits, improving hydration, reducing fear around pooing or creating a supportive toileting environment at home and school, progress is possible!
