With an increasing number of children of all ages experiencing PEE and Poo accidents in the day or night, this blog shares where to start in helping.
Toileting accidents can occur in the day or night, when starting or trying to progress with toileting. One in twelve children are identified as experiencing PEE or Poo difficulties within the UK.
Often as a parent, it can be confusing, in knowing how to overcome toileting accidents, PEE or Poo difficulties, especially when they have been occurring for several months or even years with children aged eighteen months to twenty five years, with and without additional needs.
PEE or Poo accidents do not always take place in one area. In some schools, up to 50% of children starting reception are reported to still be using or wearing pull ups in the day or night.
As children continue through education, experiencing ongoing PEE or Poo accidents within school, parents are often called in to school, either once, twice, three or more times a day, to change their child who has experienced an accident.
It can be increasingly difficult for families to do anything else, other than "wait for the call!".
Toileting difficulties can be so serious, that some parents have had to remove their child from school, altogether, in an attempt to "manage".
It is not always obvious in one environment that a child is experiencing PEE or Poo difficulties, as attempts to "hold on" increase, resulting in accidents when leaving one environment to another and often causes additional difficulties.
Toilet training is not easy!
Behind every child, who is experiencing PEE or Poo accidents, we know, here at Clear Steps Consultancy, "is" a parent, who wants to help their child and support their child, every step of the way!
Toileting is a "skill" that our children are learning!
Every child is an individual, toileting is not about age, each child learns in a different way. This means that no "one size fits all approach" works with toileting.
Many families and schools share, that they feel like they have "tried everything", however PEE or Poo accidents continue.
Often it is unknown "why" PEE or Poo accidents occur!
"When we understand "why"....then we start the journey to progress"
Where do we start in helping our children at home and school?
Children are able to progress with toileting when addressing "three" key areas.
PEE is often referred to as urine, wee, a tiddle, tinkle and so many more terms, when thinking about "what" children are passing in the toilet.
At Clear Steps Consultancy, PEE isn't just about "what" is being passed in the toilet, PEE also refers to the key areas that need to be considered and explored, for children to be able to progress with toileting.
We can start, by identifying and confirming "your" child's patterns". Keeping track and identifying "what" your child is passing in the day or night, for three to four days is a really simple but effective way of identifying "what" is happening internally, within the body.
When we can identify "what" is happening within the body, we can then help children to progress.
