Within this blog we share a child's journey to toileting confidence
Toileting isn't always easy, and for one family it felt like an impossible challenge. Their eight year old autistic son was experiencing regular wee and poo accidents at both home and school. Despite the families ongoing efforts, they reported that "nothing seemed to work". The school even said they couldn't keep supporting the child if the wetting and soiling continued. The family felt that their son was not experiencing accidents on purpose, but felt lost and frustrated without support. That's when they reached out for help from Clear Steps Consultancy.
The first step to supporting the family was understanding. Sharing a listening ear and an opportunity for the family to really share what was happening for them. It was also about understanding why wee and poo accidents were taking place. By identifying patterns and making small, practical changes, reassurance was shared that the struggles were not their fault, or their child's. With a consistent plan, overcoming wee and poo difficulties, visual supports to promote understanding and encouragement of team work between home and school, everything started to shift. The child began to recognise and understand wee and poo signals and toileting became something the child, their family and school could progress with, rather than something to fear.
Then came the moment that made it all worth it, the family reached out, excited to share that their child was now using the toilet at both home and school! Their relief was palpable and their sons confidence had soared.
