This blog shares what the connection is between drinking and toileting progress and where to start in helping your child.
Life can be busy with school, appointments, work, things to do and places to go. It can feel like a juggling act at times with things we should do and things we can let slide from time to time. So, do we really need to think about drinking? Can`t we just let our children drink when they want to? Or, when they are thirsty?
Lets have a look at what drinking is all about.
Drinking helps the body to function properly. Drinking is responsible for:
Drinking has many different important roles to play within the body. Therefore needs to be an activity that we as a parent, consciously think about, with our children, throughout the day, through regular "check ins!"
It is recommended that children drink "6-8 cups" of drink each day.
There are other factors that can influence how many drinks are consumed each day. These include:
How does drinking connect with toileting?
Toileting accidents can occur in the day or night, when starting or trying to progress with toileting. One in twelve children are identified as experiencing PEE or Poo difficulties within the UK. What influence does drinking have on toileting?
When our children drink, as well as what our children drink, can influence how our children use the toilet.
Drinking can directly influence the frequency of wees passed in the day and night. Drinking can also directly influence the consistency and type of poos passed, as well as where they are passed.
Where do we start in helping our children at home and school?
Children are able to start progressing with toileting when we review our childrens drinking, the number, the types and amount.
We can start helping our children, by identifying and confirming "your" child's patterns. Keeping track and identifying "what" your child is drinking in the day or night, for three to four days is a really simple but effective way of identifying "what" influence drinking is having on your child's toileting progress.
